My area of expertise is in microbial food safety, with emphasis on foodborne viruses. My research is focused on determining the mechanisms by which fresh produce is contaminated by foodborne viruses during production and processing and which biological and environmental factors influence viral persistence in these foods. I also have evaluated methods for detection and mitigation of viruses in fresh produce and other raw foods, with the goal of optimizing and validating these methods in order to decrease the incidence of virally associated outbreaks.
